Canadian Lottery Scam Hits Wilmington

WILMINGTON – A check came in the mail worth $2,000, with a letter saying they’d won $85,000. But Fred Sansevero and his wife thought it sounded too good to be true. The letter came Saturday from the Spanish Sweepstakes Lottery. But when the Sanseveros called the number in the letter and on the check, they got no answer and learned the numbers originated in Canada. The scammers asked Sansevero to front some money and cash the check in return.

The problem? The check is real, but the account doesn’t exist.

The Sanseveros did not fall for the scam, and now they want to warn other residents about it.

The couple contacted the Attorney General’s office and they’re going to look into the letter scam.
